Broadway's Spider-Man, Reeve Carney, Lands Big Role in Showtime's Penny DreadfulWe’ve been keeping you up-to-date with casting news for Showtime’s 8-episode series “Penny Dreadful” as we learn about new additions, and today we found out that a certain web-slinger has found his way into the fold.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeve Carney has joined the cast of the show. Carney is most known for portraying Spider-Man in the hit Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, and he will be portraying the confident and mesmerizing Dorian Gray in the series.

Carney joins the previously announced Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, and Eva Green. Dalton will be playing African explorer “Sir Malcolm,” while Hartnett will play the role of “Ethan Chandler,” a charming American who finds himself trapped in the darkest corners of Victorian London. Green will play “Vanessa Ives,” a seductive and formidable beauty full of secrets and danger. Juan Antonio Bayona will helm the first two episodes of the series.

“Penny Dreadful” is created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call the Midwife). Bayona is an acclaimed and award-winning director, best known for his work on the hugely successful 2007 horror film The Orphanage and the 2012 Oscar contender The Impossible.

“Penny Dreadful” will begin filming in October and premiere on Showtime in spring 2014. Look for lots more soon!

In “Penny Dreadful” some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – become embroiled in Victorian London. The series weaves together these classic horror origin stories as the characters grapple with their monstrous alienation.
