Director Mike Flanagan Praises Free-To-Stream Mindmelter: “I love this movie”

During the uncertainty of the COVID pandemic, Mike Flanagan put his downtime to good use and partnered with Rotten Tomatoes to create a binge guide to distract from the uncertainty of lockdown. That guide has turned me onto several films I likely wouldn’t have seen otherwise. So, I am pleased to be sharing the wealth and passing another suggestion along to our readers.

This recommendation is helmed by the ultra-talented filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Flanagan has often championed the collective output of the duo. So, it’s no surprise to learn that he’s a fan of the pair’s 2018 film The Endless.

“I had a hard time choosing which film by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson to include on this list—every film they’ve ever made belongs here,” Flanagan told Rotten Tomatoes. “Resolution and Spring are both miracles of low-budget filmmaking. I went with The Endless because of the additional joy I get watching Aaron and Justin act in the film. This time-bending, mind-bending classic is the tale of two brothers who stumble into strangeness when revisiting the UFO death cult they’d escaped as children. I love this movie and all of their work.”

Benson and Moorhead are certainly a creative force, so I’m not surprised that Mr. Flanagam had difficulty picking just one of their cinematic gems. If you’ve yet to see The Endless, don’t fret. The flick is streaming on Tubi as of the publication of this post. Hooray!

The setup is as follows: As kids, they escaped a UFO death cult. Now, two adult brothers seek answers after an old videotape surfaces and brings them back to where they began.
