Horror maven Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about filmmaking. So, when he shares a recommendation, we’re all ears.

The Oscar-winning director recently tweeted about a Netflix original crime thriller called Emily the Criminal. Del Toro has nothing but praise for the film, professing his appreciation for the picture’s unflinching approach to storytelling and lead actor Aubrey Plaza’s showing as the titular character.

Emily the Criminal finds the lead character “down on her luck and saddled with debt. She gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences.

The picture may be writer/director John Patton Ford’s feature film debut. But he came out of the gate swinging. Emily the Criminal has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. In fact, the flick is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes, with an impressive average of 94% positive responses from critics. But it’s not just critics that are raving about the flick. Rotten Tomatoes users are also taken by this edgy crime picture. Accordingly, the audience score currently sits at an impressive 79%.

I’m right there with Guillermo del Toro on this one. I caught the film when it dropped on the platform and I think Plaza is fantastic. She seamlessly transitions from the comedic roles for which she is best known and digs into the darker, grittier material with aplomb. Additionally, the tension is palpable through most of the film and I found the ending to be perfectly fitting.

Aside from Plaza in the lead role, the film also stars Theo Rossi, Bernardo Badillo, John Billingsley, and Kim Yarbrough.
