Many Stephen King novels get adapted for the screen. However, as much as we love many of these movies, few have the same cultural impact as this title. We spotted Misery at least streaming on Max (formerly HBO Max) and needed to talk about this classic snowy tale of intimate terror. Allow me to remind you why this is one of the most revered King adaptations.

In the film,

“After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favorite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.”

Misery was directed by Rob Reiner and was adapted for the screen by William Goldman, based on a Stephen King novel of the same name. The cast includes James Caan, Kathy Bates, Frances Sternhagen, Richard Farnsworth, and Lauren Bacall.

Misery is also celebrated because it is one of the few horror movies to win an Academy Award. Kathy Bates brought home the Best Actress Oscar for her performance. Surprisingly, it is the only time she has an Oscar, and that upsets me on so many levels.

Let me know if you plan to watch Stephen King’s Misery on Max this month at @misssharai. Also, let me know if this is one of the few times you think the movie might be better than the book.
