A Sequel To ‘The Blackening’ Has Officially Been Greenlit

If you’re like me, you finished The Blackening and instantly wished more movies were firing on that level. How often do we get horror comedies helmed by Black folks and starring Black actors? Do you know how few horror movies Black characters even make it to the end of in the year 2023 of our Lord Megan Thee Stallion? Well, in a win for the Blerds, and people with a working sense of humor, the groundbreaking film is getting a sequel.
It was announced that a follow-up Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver hit has been greenlit. While nothing is concrete yet, it would seem that Perkins is already thinking about what The Blackening franchise could look like. He told Variety his vision is, “Same group, sprinkle in some new people,” he explained. “I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.”

I want to live in a world with a BCU (The Blackening Cinematic Universe). So, I sincerely hope the powers that be are listening. If you somehow missed this movie in theaters, allow me to tell you what you missed. Read the synopsis and watch the trailer below. Then ask your friends why they didn’t invite you to their Juneteenth plans because it’s awkward.
In the film,
“Seven friends go away for the weekend, only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who has a vendetta. They must pit their street smarts and knowledge of horror movies against the murderer to stay alive.”
The Blackening was directed by Tim Story. It was co-written by Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver. It was originally a skit written by Perkins that grew into a short film. The feature stars Antoinette Robertson, Dewayne Perkins, Sinqua Walls, Grace Byers, X Mayo, Melvin Gregg, Jermaine Fowler, Yvonne Orji, and Jay Pharoah.
Aside from the movie being a good time, it is also encouraging to other Black filmmakers, who are struggling to get their foot in the door. Tracy Oliver mentioned in an interview with Variety that, “I keep telling the cast and other writers, there’s money out there. $3 million is a lot easier to come by than $20-50 million. We don’t have to necessarily wait for a studio to say ‘Yes’ anymore. For a Black person, that’s inspiring.”

The Blackening was made for less than $5 million and earned more than $18 million at the box office. The movie is currently streaming on Starz if you are overdue for a rewatch or missed it in theaters.
I have watched this movie a few times, and it only gets funnier. It keeps getting compared to Knives Out. However, I had much more fun with this and think Clue is way closer to the vibe.
