The last few years have seen many titles inspired by, or loosely based on, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Movies like Birth/Rebirth and The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster are claiming space on Shudder this month. There were so many indie filmmakers attempting to breathe new life into the legend between 2021 and 2022 that it is nearly impossible to keep track of them all.

However, a new Turkish limited series on Netflix seems to be reanimating this beloved tale in a very exciting and unique way. Creature is on the Netflix Top 10 (TV Non-English) Chart for the second week. Let us poke the monster and see what it is all about, shall we?

Netflix Official Synopsis

“Creature, an epic story that takes place in the final era of the Ottoman Empire dwells on one of the most fundamental questions of mankind, “death and afterlife”. Ziya, an adventurous, rebellious, thriving, and smart, young medical student has the insatiable desire to become an excellent physician and to find cure to infectious diseases. Ziya’s path crosses with Ihsan, a fellow medical doctor, balancing the fine line between genius and insanity. He is the only person who truly understands Ziya’s ambitions. However, these two estranged, wounded souls will pay the price for the forbidden experiment they were brave enough to conduct. The ancient encryption they have tried to decrypt could let all hell break loose.”

This seems like my kind of weird gothic party. Because it is such a quick binge, I wonder if this is how I should spend my Saturday. It is that time of year when no one wants to go outside, and I need a monster-filled series to fill the hole in my soul.
