Shocking New Hulu Documentary Exposing “America’s Most Extreme” Haunted Attraction Dominates Streaming Charts

Haunts are part and parcel of the Halloween season itself. It might be easy to forget, especially for peripheral consumers of Halloween haunts and scares, but haunts aren’t just big business—they’re a lifestyle. There are entire communities of people from developers to scare actors for whom haunts aren’t just ephemeral scares—they’re core components of identity.

Last year, I spotlighted 5 haunts that dabble in real tragedy, and this year, director Andrea Renzi tackled one of the most infamous haunts (if you can even call it that) around; McKamey Manor.

The new documentary, Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House, premiered October 12 on Hulu, and now, it’s the second most-watched title on the streamer. Check out the trailer and synopsis below.

Official Hulu synopsis

Russ McKamey is the creator of the world’s most extreme haunted house – McKamey Manor. He is also a manipulative abuser, according to three people who realize the horror is never over once you decide to enter the Manor.

The infamous, ostensible haunt operates year-round, reportedly making use of survival horror elements as part of its extreme haunt. Guests are asked to sign a liability waiver, including a line that prevents guests from leaving, as they endure hours of abuse and torture including, but not limited to physical and psychological abuse, broken bones, tooth removal, drugging, and anesthesia.

Reasonably, the media reaction hasn’t been kind, and in 2017, the haunt relocated from San Diego to Tennessee where local officials are expectedly sick of Russ McKamey and everything to do with him. In 2016, Laura Hertz Brotherton was admitted to the hospital with extensive injuries after McKamey Manor staff failed to heed her safe word for several minutes.

With a waiting list of over 24,000 people, a new location in Huntsville, Alabama, and a new iteration of the “haunt,” titled “Descent,” McKamey Manor doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Will Hulu’s documentary make much of a difference? Probably not, since McKamey Manor proudly hosts negative coverage of the haunt on its landing page.
