‘My Animal’ Trailer: A Queer Love Story Wrapped In Lycanthropy

Werewolves have served as a metaphor in horror since the beginning of the genre. Whether for the innate cruelty of mankind or for female rage, lycanthropy has been a potent way to exemplify the terrifying effects of repression. Now, writer Jae Matthews and director Jacqueline Castel are taking that metaphor and making it unabashedly queer with the upcoming horror film My Animal, a chilling (literally) and heartbreaking look at queer identity, acceptance, and generational trauma.

Read the full synopsis below:

Tormented by a hidden family curse, Heather is forced to live a secluded life on the outskirts of a small town. When she falls for the rebellious Jonny, their connection threatens to unravel Heather’s suppressed desires, tempting her to unleash the animal within.

In her review of the film from the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews wrote,

My Animal is a moving tale of beautiful yet ultimately fleeting queer love with a stunning cast. The stark landscape is the perfect setting for something small yet beautiful to bloom, surviving only briefly but surviving nonetheless. Werewolf diehards, don’t go in expecting a bloody massacre in the light of the full moon. Rather, horror fans should expect 90s synth sounds, gorgeous work with lighting, and a vibe-heavy tale of queer survival.

Bobbi Salvör Menuez, Amandla Stenberg, Heidi von Palleske, Cory Lipman, Charlie & Harrison Halpenny, Joe Apollonio, Scott Thompson, Dean McDermott, and Stephen McHattie star in the film.

My Animal comes to select theaters on September 8 and on digital on September 15.
