‘Megalomaniac’ Trailer: Bloody New Extreme Horror Is Ready To Make You Squirm

Megalomaniac

Coming soon from Belgian director Karim Ouelhaj is the twisted and beautifully repulsive Megalomaniac. On the surface, Ouelhaj’s new film seems to just be a violent affair that revels in the destruction of female bodies. But as the film progresses, it’s revealed that this isn’t just about spectacle, but about legacy and the toxic, and destructive, power such a legacy can have.

Read the full synopsis below:

Martha and Félix are the children of the Butcher of Mons, a notorious Belgian serial killer from the 1990s. Unstable and riddled with insecurities, Martha lives vicariously through social media. Her brother, crushed by the family legacy, takes over their father’s killings. Harassed and violently assaulted at work, the docile Martha falls into madness and goes through the looking glass into the strange and terrifying world inhabited by her brother.

Just from the trailer alone, you can see Ouelhaj is firing on all demented cylinders here, from the stylistic violence to the seemingly demonic figures haunting the frame. If you’re a fan of New French Extremity, then this needs to move to the top of your watchlist.

In her review of the film from Panic Fest, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews wrote,

Megalomaniac is by no means a pleasant watch. Some could even call it downright miserable. But, it is also an exquisitely repulsive one that isn’t afraid to find beauty in abjection. Ouelhaj’s film is challenging and bizarre, certain to garner the attention of extreme horror fans hungry for new depravity. And depravity it brings, as Ouelhaj’s eye for violence is as captivating as it is disturbing. This movie feels cursed and dirty, and for that reason, I love it even more.

Eline Schumacher, Wim Willaert, Benjamin Ramon, Pierre Nisse, and Raphaëlle Lubansu star in the film.

Megalomaniac comes to theaters on September 8, 2023, from Dark Star Pictures.
