10 Overhyped Recent Horror Films, According To Reddit [Video]

Reddit woke up and chose violence this week. User u/coffeeandmimics asked the website’s horror community, “What horror movie do you think didn’t live up to all the hype?” and tried to drag the unimpeachable Nope into the conversation. It did not take long before other users started airing their grievances with some popular movies on the thread. While clutching our pearls, we noticed how divisive some of the top movies truly are. Here are the Top 10 horror movies Reddit has beef with this week.

Smile (2022)

Where You Can Watch: Paramount+ and Prime Video

A psychiatrist witnesses a traumatic event and then becomes the target of an evil entity. Reddit seems unimpressed with this psychological horror movie, and many users got mean.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

Pooh and Piglet go on a bloody rampage when they are left to their own devices. Many people were unimpressed with this violent reimaging of beloved childhood figures.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Where You Can Watch: Max

The evil spirits weren’t quite finished with the Lamberts and continue to wreak havoc on their lives in this sequel. It seems a lot of viewers would’ve been happier if Chapter 1 had been the end of the story.

X (2022)

Where You Can Watch: Showtime

Ti West’s baby follows a group of adult filmmakers who picked the wrong house for their latest location. This one shocks me because it seemed like everyone loved this movie last year, but suddenly they see the flaws in this pearl now. Suspicious!

The Purge (2013)

Where You Can Watch: Peacock

A wealthy family is targeted during a 12-hour window where all crime is legal. If so many people supposedly hate this movie, why is it an entire franchise that also spawned a TV show?

The Nun (2018)

Where You Can Watch: Max

An investigation into the death of a nun leads to a confrontation with an evil force. This is probably one of the few titles I expected to see on this list. However, I do love the cast and some of the design elements.

Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Where You Can Watch: Max

Sisters find themselves in a bloody battle with demons. I was fine to look the other way for the other titles on this list but not this one. Evil Dead Rise is a damn good time, and I need to speak to Reddit’s manager.

The Black Phone (2022)

Where You Can Watch: Prime Video

A kid who has been abducted begins to receive mysterious phone calls from his perpetrator’s previous victims. Tons of people have a lot of thoughts on this movie, so it’s not too shocking to see it appear in this Reddit list.

Antlers (2021)

Where You Can Watch: VOD

Siblings face off against a terrifying ancestral creature. Reddit has no chill when it comes to this movie. However, I love Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons, so I am erasing myself from this narrative.

Skinamarink (2023)

Where You Can Watch: Shudder

Two kids wake up to find out their father is missing, and the windows and doors to their home are also gone. Because this movie has a die-hard fanbase that writes paragraphs about how others just don’t understand it…it’s very bold of Reddit to restart this debate.
