The #1 Sci-Fi Thriller Streaming On Max Is A ‘Project Greenlight’ Alumni
A brand-spanking new sci-fi thriller has claimed the top spot on the charts today. The movie, Gray Matter, is the #1 thriller on Max (formerly HBOMax). It had a very unique development process and hit the streamer last week. Here is everything we know about this exciting project.
Rotten Tomatoes Synopsis
“The science fiction thriller directed by Meko Winbush centers on Ayla and her daughter Aurora, who both possess superhuman abilities. As Ayla attempts to train Aurora how to navigate these abilities, a tragic incident finds Aurora in control of her fate, and forces Ayla to confront the truth of her past.”
Gray Matter is directed by Meko Winbush. It was written by Philip Gelatt. The movie stars Mia Isaac, Jessica Frances Dukes, Garret Dillahunt, Andrew Liner, and Isabella Ferreira.

The movie is Meko Winbush’s first feature and was filmed in 18 days as part of Project Greenlight: A New Generation Project. For those not in the know, the series is a relaunch of Project Greenlight a show that followed first-time filmmakers selected to make an independent film.
Among the many issues with the original series, they unsurprisingly managed to never choose a woman director. The new version made that glaring oversight part of its mission and introduced a less problematic team of judges. This new season hit the streamer on July 13th alongside the fruits of its labor, Gray Matter.
Whatever the results, I’m here for any Black woman directing sci-fi with Black leads. It’s also nice to finally break the endless streak of male directors constantly chosen during Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s era of the series.
So, Meko Winbush has my attention, and I’m checking out Gray Matter if I don’t do anything else this weekend. See the trailer below to see if you want to add this to your watchlist too.
