Everything We Know So Far About ‘Insidious: The Red Door’
The Insidious franchise started out strong. The first installment garnered praise from critics and moviegoers, alike. But I have found the sequels to be something of a mixed bag. With that said, I have high hopes for the upcoming fifth series entry, Insidious: The Red Door. At this juncture, we know the impending sequel will follow the events depicted in Insidious 2.
The upcoming installment was initially subtitled Fear the Dark. But the creative team ultimately landed on The Red Door. The film will mark the return of the Lambert family after the narrative shifted away from their arc to focus on Elise’s origin story in the third and fourth films.
At the end of Insidious 2, Dalton and Josh Lambert had their memories of their experiences in The Further suppressed. This time around, Josh and an adult Dalton will make their final (?) return to The Further. While there, they must face down past evils and confront that which lurks beyond the red door.
With Insidious: The Red Door gearing up to hit theaters soon, we have put together an easily digestible package with all the latest developments. Read on for everything we know about Insidious: The Red Door. And be sure to let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter!
The series’ fifth installment is poised for a Summer 2023 release.
Insidious: The Red Door will bow before audiences on July 7, 2023. It will play in theaters across the nation and will be exclusively available on the big screen, with a premium VOD window likely to follow suit.
A trailer has dropped in advance of the film’s impending release.
The preview features a couple of solid jump scares, something the Insidious franchise is well known for. If you’re keen to check it out for yourself (and haven’t already done so) you can scope it in the player below.
The film’s cast has been announced and includes a number of returning players.
Patrick Wilson will, once again, play the Lambert family patriarch, Josh; Ty Simpkins will appear again as Dalton; Rose Byrne is confirmed to return as Renai; and Andrew Astor will be coming back as Foster. Additionally, Lin Shaye will reprise the role of Elise but likely only through flashbacks, archival footage, or as a specter in The Further, seeing as she met with death at the end of the series’ first installment.
This time around, the narrative is expected to focus largely on Dalton, who has grown into an adult human in the ten years since he last featured in an Insidious film. Much of the action looks like it will take place on his college campus.
Additional cast members include Peter Dager, Sinclair Daniel, Jarquez McClendon, and Hiam Abbass. Abass will be familiar to genre fans from her turn in Hellraiser (2022), while the rest of the aforementioned additions are relative newcomers to the business.
The Red Door is being positioned as the series’ final installment.
With that said, anyone that has seen Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, or The Final Destination knows that finality is a fickle mistress when it comes to horror franchises. And if The Red Door is a hit, we will almost certainly see a return visit to the property at some point.
The film will be helmed by a first-time director…
And that director will be none other than Insidious franchise stalwart Patrick Wilson. In addition to reprising his role as Josh Lambert, the actor also scored his first directorial credit with Insidious: The Red Door.
The project boasts some impressive creative talent working behind the scenes.
Franchise co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are each involved with The Red Door. Both are producers on the project and Whannell receives a ‘story by’ credit, with Scott Teems (Halloween Kills) penning the screenplay for the upcoming follow-up effort. Additionally, Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli and Blumhouse executive Jason Blum are on deck to produce the project.
