James Wan To Help Bring Stephen King’s ‘The Monkey’ To The Big Screen
The devil works hard but not as hard as Stephen King’s agent. Yet another of his short stories is being adapted for the big screen, according to Deadline. This one is called The Monkey and has already cast Theo James (The Time Traveler’s Wife) as the lead.
The story follows twin brothers who find their father’s old toy monkey, which sets off a chain of gruesome deaths. They decide to throw the toy away, but after a while, their problems come back to haunt them again.
The Monkey was originally published in 1980. Then Stephen King included it in his Skeleton Crew collection in 1985.
The film was written and will be directed, by Osgood Perkins. Aside from being the son of icon Anthony Perkins, he’s also known for directing such films as The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel. So, I’m very excited to see what he does with a Stephen King story.
To make the project even more interesting, it will be co-produced by James Wan’s company Atomic Monster. When asked about the project he said: “Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career, and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life. The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic, and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.”
The Monkey will join the other King project we reported on earlier today at the Cannes Market.
