‘Dead Ringers’ Star Rachel Weisz On Playing The Mantle Twins [Watch]
David Cronenberg’s 1988 film Dead Ringers is perhaps one of his most tame films, but also one of his most psychologically twisted. Following twin gynecologists, played by Jeremy Irons, the film follows their toxic relationship and obsession with “mutant” vaginas. Now, in 2023, writer Alice Birch has taken Cronenberg’s text and made it into something new, something more reflective of the constant struggle women face to maintain bodily autonomy. With her series adaptation of Dead Ringers starring Rachel Weisz, the Mantle twins are now two women looking to revolutionize how people give birth.

A modern take on David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller starring Jeremy Irons, Dead Ringers features Rachel Weisz playing the double-lead roles of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes—including pushing the boundaries of medical ethics—in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s health care to the forefront.
