Conan O’Brien’s Three Favorite Horror Movies Are Surprisngly Disturbing

Most of us are familiar with Conan O’Brien’s work as a comedian and former late-night host. However, I do not think any of us suspected his taste in horror movies would be so dark.

On an episode of his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend he talked about what he looks for in a horror movie:

“I find movies where something’s just off, but it’s not that explicit…That terrifies me.” He continued, “In the movie The Witch, they can just show trees in the distance, and they’re undulating in the breeze, but because of the tone they’ve set and the music, I find that scary.”

He then listed The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar as three of his favorite horror movies. For the uninitiated, here is what to expect with these disturbing modern hits.

The Witch (2015)

A family in 1630s New England encounters witchcraft, black magic, and possession. Arguably Robert Eggers’s best film to date. It’s a slow burn but a must-watch for those who “like to live deliciously.” It is also an indicator that the former talk show host is here to be unsettled.

Hereditary (2018)

A grieving family finds out their recently deceased matriarch had secrets. This film is possibly the most disturbing movie I have ever seen in a theater. It also led to one of the biggest upsets when Toni Collette didn’t receive all of the acting nominations for one of the best performances in a horror film. This might be a sign that Team Coco has beef with the Academy like the rest of us.

Midsommar (2019)

A group of Americans goes to an isolated Swedish town for a festival. They soon find themselves trapped with a violent cult with sinister motives. Conan O’Brien is a much darker soul than we assumed he was. While the majority of this film is bright and sunny, the first scene is worth the price of admission alone. wrth2
