The #1 Documentary On the Netflix Charts Is Leaving Viewers “Shocked” And “Enraged”

The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker hit Netflix Tuesday and flew to the number 1 spot on their Top 10 Movies Chart in the U.S. What looked like a bizarre documentary quickly revealed itself to be a very upsetting story of exploitation, mental illness, and murder.

Synopsis

This shocking documentary chronicles a happy-go-lucky nomad’s ascent to viral stardom and the steep downward spiral that resulted in his imprisonment. The film is directed by Colette Camden.

Kai was interviewed in a video that went viral in February 2013. His wild tale made him a bit of an internet hatchet-wielding hero hitchhiker. However, in May 2013, he was arrested for murder in what he says was self-defense. His newfound fans immediately started raising funds for his legal defense. Sadly, the jury found him guilty, and he is now serving a sentence of 57 years in prison.

Because the documentary wasn’t heavily publicized most viewers were unaware of what the film was about until they hit play. Now they find themselves questioning how so many systems failed Kai, the justice system, and calling out the various people who exploited his story.
