Everything We Know About ‘The Lost Boys’ Reboot So Far

The Lost Boys

We’ve been reporting on some form of reimaging of the iconic Joel Schumacher film The Lost Boys for several years now. At one point, the redux was being prepped for the small screen via The CW as a serialized drama. The network had Veronica Mars creator, Rob Thomas and Marcos Siega (The Vampire Diaries) involved and working on a pilot. In that incarnation, The Frog Brothers were to be replaced by The Frog Sisters. However, that effort has since stalled out and some major movement has transpired on a big screen reboot via Warner Brothers.

The 1987 original film follows single mother Lucy (Dianne Wiest) as she relocates to the beachside town of Santa Carla with her sons, Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim). But once they settle into their new digs, the brothers begin to suspect the town is teaming with bloodthirsty vampires.

The iconic cast of the Joel Schumacher original includes Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland, Jamison Newlander, Jami Gertz, Dianne Wiest, Brooke McCarter, Billy Wirth, Edward Herrmann, and Alex Winter.

The Lost Boys received two direct-to-DVD sequels with 2008’s The Lost Boys: The Tribe and 2010’s The Lost Boys: The ThirstThe Tribe currently sits at a score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, as does The Thirst. But the silver lining is that there is nowhere to go but up from there.

In anticipation of the upcoming reimagining, we have tracked down all the latest developments and compiled them in one convenient location. Now, feast your eyes on everything we know about The Lost Boys reboot.

The redux has already secured a writer, director, and producers.

Randy McKinnon (who is also attached to the upcoming Static Shock film) is assuming screenwriting duties. And Jonathon Entwistle (best known for the Netflix series, The End of the F***ing World) has been tapped to direct the redux.

Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger have signed onto The Lost Boys redux to produce through their production company, Automatik. Additionally, Josh Glick and Zac Frognowski are set to executive produce.

The film will be set in the present.

As much as I’d love to see this project realized as a period piece set in the ‘80s, I think the more the creative team can do to differentiate from its predecessor and carve a new path, the better. Additionally, the soundtrack from the original features an iconic collection of artists, so updating the film for contemporary audiences will allow the filmmakers behind this reimagining to showcase a sampling representative of that which is popular today. Fingers crossed that the soundtrack will have the same kind of staying power as the 1987 original.

With that said, we know that the CW reboot of The Lost Boys was aiming to feature variations of some of the songs that accompanied the original. So, it’s entirely possible the forthcoming reimagining will include a version of “Cry Little Sister”. I will also be keeping my fingers crossed for an oily saxophone solo. But I won’t hold my breath.

Two cast members have been announced to date

Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) and Jaeden Martell (It) have been tapped for lead roles in the upcoming project. However, the casting announcement didn’t specify which role either actor would be taking on. It would be logical to assume they may play Sam and Josh. However, that is purely speculation at this juncture.

The storyline and character details are closely guarded.

Warner Brothers is being rather tight-lipped about what fans can expect from the upcoming big screen reboot. But that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate a bit.

I strongly suspect the reimagining of The Lost Boys will keep the core storyline of brothers relocating to a coastal town inhabited by vampires. My hope is that the redux will set out to separate itself from the original while capturing the spirit and essence of its predecessor, as any good reboot should.

While nothing is for sure at this point, the film is in the hands of several talented creators. So, I have high hopes for an epic return to Santa Carla.
