‘Polaris’: Survive A Desolate Arctic Future in Chilling New Teaser [Watch]

Polaris

Ahead of its premiere at the opening night of the Fantasia International Film Festival, Variety exclusively shared the first teaser trailer for Polaris. This post-apocalyptic film is the second feature film from director KC Carthews. It’s also an extension of her short film “Fish Out of Water,” which debuted at Fantasia in 2015.

Read the full synopsis for the film:

Set in 2144 against the harsh backdrop of a frozen wasteland, Sumi, a human child raised by Mama Polar Bear, narrowly escapes capture from a brutal Morad hunting party and sets out across the vast winter landscape. When Sumi stumbles across Frozen Girl, an unlikely friendship is forged and together they race ahead of the vindictive hunters towards the only guiding light Sumi knows, the Polaris star.

Carthew told Variety:

Polaris is inspired by my love of stories about relations between humans and Nature, while also reimagining aspects of Greek mythology. Filmed in the subarctic, the story is set in a futuristic frozen world born of the brutal disregard of generations prior – where any nation could be buried under the snow.”

Variety also shared a few of Carthew’s director’s notes. In one note, Carthew describes Sumi:

“Sumi has an intimate relationship with nature and extraordinary survival skills: she can speak with animals and trees but has not yet learned to speak with people. Other humans speak fictional languages to represent this gap in understanding. This creates a primarily non-verbal experience that is strengthened by not having subtitles. My intention is to place audiences in the story world and encourage an emotionally immersive type of film-watching that is more empathy-based, intuitive and universal,”

Viva Lee, Khamisa Wilsher, and Muriel Dutil star in Polaris.

A Yukon-Quebec-Ontario co-production with support from the Northwest Territories, Polaris is produced by Carthew, Max Fraser, Paul Cadieux, and Alyson Richards.

Filmoption International handles Canadian distribution while co-financier Epic Pictures has world sales. Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald serves as executive producer. Epic Pictures is the parent company of Dread Central.

The 26th Fantasia International Film Festival runs from July 14 to August 3.
