Sam Raimi Says ‘Evil Dead Rise’ Is “Terrifying”

It’s been quiet on the Evil Dead Rise front for a little while now. But fear not, horror hero Sam Raimi has spoken up with updates in recent conversations with Slash Film. According to the director of the original series, Evil Dead Rise is now in post sound production. This means we’re likely to see the fifth entry in the Evil Dead cinematic universe on HBO Max before the year is up. If I had to guess, I’d say spooky season 2022 is going to be real stacked. Raimi also had a few words of support for Lee Cronin and the quality of the new film.

“I’ve seen a rough cut [of ‘Evil Dead Rise’], a medium fine cut, and a fine cut. There’s probably a few changes that Lee Cronin is making that I haven’t seen, but it’s great. It’s terrifying and it’s going to knock people’s socks off,” Raimi told the outlet.

The Hollywood heavy shared more about this feelings towards Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin and where the film is at in its production journey:

“He had always liked ‘Evil Dead,’ and I loved ‘The Hole in the Ground.’ And that picture was brought to the executives that I work with and they showed it to me and I thought, this is really a great director. And we met and we talked and he said he really liked ‘The Evil Dead.’ And I said, then why don’t you make the new one? I think you’re just the kind [of] guy I’d like to do it. He said, great. Let’s go. We put together a script and we gave notes and he made some changes and then we raised money for the movie and he went down to New Zealand to shoot it with my partner, Rob Tapert. Now Bruce Campbell is working with him in post production sound.”

Although Bruce Campbell is working behind the camera duties, he has been clear from the start of production that he will not be making an appearance in the new film. That said, we’re still excited as hell to see what Evil Dead Rise has in store. Putting the action in a totally different setting could be the refresher the franchise has been looking for since the 2013 remake starring Jane Levy.

Evil Dead Rise hails from Lee Cronin (dir. The Hole in the Ground) and stars Alyssa Sutherland, Lily Sullivan, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, and Nell Fisher. Both Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi are serving as executive producers.
