‘The Medium’: Shudder Drops New Trailer For Thai Found Footage Horror Film

Religious horror has a reputation of being focused on Catholic beliefs, as aged exorcists confront the Devil with their old Bibles and vials of holy water. But religious horror is so much more than priests and crucifixes. Director Banjong Pisanthanakun proves that in his new film The Medium which deals with shamanistic practices in Thailand. And after watching the trailer, we couldn’t be more excited.

Check out the newly released trailer for The Medium:

The Medium begins with a documentary team following Nim, a shaman based in Northern Thailand, the Isan area. They encounter her niece Mink showing strange symptoms that seem to be of inheritance of shamanism. The team decides to follow Mink, hoping to capture the shaman lineage passing on to the next generation, but her bizarre behavior becomes more extreme.

The trailer also reveals The Medium is a found footage horror film. Quick shots reveal moments of shaky cinematography and horror caught in the single light on top of a camera. Plus, the trailer’s narration is reminiscent of documentary interviews as characters speak as if these events actually happened. I’m a sucker for found footage, so the idea of using the format to dive into Thai mysticism is an incredibly exciting prospect.

The Medium is the latest feature from Pisanthanakun who co-directed and co-wrote the ghost story Shutter with Parkpoom Wongpoom. Na Hong-Jin, the director behind the horrifying Korean religious horror film The Wailing, will serve as producer. Pisanthanakun and Na co-wrote The Medium. Sawanee Utoomma, Narilya Gulmongkolpech, and Sirani Yankittikan star.

While The Medium isn’t out in the US yet, it was released in South Korea this past summer. It currently stands as the 6th highest-grossing Korean film of 2021. This bodes well for the horrors that await us in the upcoming film.
