Exclusive Clip From ‘Coming Home In The Dark’ Teases A Menacing Villain

James Ashcroft’s directorial debut Coming Home In The Dark is not for the faint of heart. It’s brutal and unrelenting, but also beautifully shot and incredibly acted. Ashcroft combines these seemingly disparate elements into a film that punches you in the gut, all while telling a devastating yet crucial story about a dark part of New Zealand’s history.

This exclusive clip gives you a glimpse at Coming Home In The Dark‘s tension, as well as a stellar performance from Daniel Gillies as Mandrake:

Check out the film’s synopsis below:

A family’s idyllic outing at an isolated coastline descends into terror when high school teacher Alan ‘Hoaggie’ Hoaganraad, his wife Jill, and stepsons Maika and Jordon unexpectedly come across a pair of murderous drifters – the enigmatic psychopath Mandrake and his hulking man-child accomplice Tubs – who thrust them into a nightmare road trip. At first, the family’s terror seems to be born of a random encounter with two sociopaths, but as the night drags on, Hoaggie and Jill realize that this nightmare was set in motion 20 years earlier.

Coming Home In The Dark marks a career-defining performance for Gillies. The actor has appeared in television series such as The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. He imbues Mandrake with so much hatred and malice. Dressed in an almost comical trenchcoat, Gillies is anything but funny as he ruthlessly tortures this family.

Coming Home In The Dark

Erik Thomson, Miriama McDowell, Matthias Luafutu, Billy Paratene, Frankie Paratene, Bailey Cowan star in the film alongside Gillies. Ashcroft co-wrote the script with Eli Kent. Mike Minogue, Catherine Fitzgerald, Desray Armstrong produced the film with Ashcroft serving as executive producer.

Coming Home In The Dark hits select theaters and VOD On October 1st.
