James Wan Hypes Up Fans in New ‘Malignant’ Trailer

James Wan 'Malignant'

Less than two weeks out from the release of Malignant, Warner Bros. has dropped a new trailer for the hotly anticipated film from James Wan.

The forthcoming feature looks to be rife with allusions to imaginary friends, familial trauma, and time travel. This new footage is another sample of what looks to be an airtight piece of work from the veteran horror helmer. The trailer digs into the mind of Maddie (Anabelle Wallis), the film’s protagonist first introduced in another trailer last month.

We also get a fleeting glance of a ghostly specter named Gabriel, whose presence seems to seep omnipotently through the rays of an old CRT TV that plays back Maddie’s (possibly haunted?) home movies.

In a slight twist on the traditional trailer format, director James Wan interrupts the action to tell audiences what he hoped to achieve by making the film.

“I wanted to do something that was a bit different, [and] yet hark back to my roots,” Wan says. “You gotta take chances. If you don’t, you end up making the same old thing again and again and again. I think audiences are starved for something that’s new and different.”

Malignant is written by Akela Cooper (M3GAN, The Nun 2). It’s on a story he co-wrote with Wan and Ingrid Bisu. Wan reunited with several of his frequent collaborators on the film.

Cinematographer Don Burgess and editor Kirk Morri previously worked with Wan on Aquaman and The Conjuring 2. Production designer Desma Murphy (Aquaman, Furious 7) and costume designer Lisa Norcia (Insidious: The Last Key) also lend their talents to the old school horror thriller, and composer Joseph Bishara, who scored all seven films in Wan’s The Conjuring franchise, rejoins Wan to create Malignant‘s jarring soundscape.

Malignant opens in theaters and on HBO Max September 10, 2021.
