Shudder Acquires ‘Slapface’ and ‘The Advent Calendar’, FrightFest Premieres to Follow

Shudder 'The Advent Calendar'

Shudder announced today that it has acquired the creature feature Slapface and the French holiday horror-fantasy The Advent Calendar. Both films will premiere at Arrow Video FrightFest in London this month.

Slapface stars August Maturo (The Nun) and Mike Manning (The Call) as Lucas and Tom, two brothers who are drawn to local myths surrounding a mysterious monster after losing their mother in an accident. Writer-director Jeremiah Kipp’s film won the Audience Award at San Jose’s Cinequest Film Festival earlier this year.

Writer-director Patrick Ridremont’s The Advent Calendar follows Eva (Eugénie Derouand), a former dancer who can no longer walk and is constrained to a wheelchair. She’s given an antique advent calendar by a friend (Honorine Magnier) as Christmas approaches, and comes to find that each window unleashes real-life occurrences—some of them deadly.

Shudder plans to release both films exclusively in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The Advent Calendar will land on the platform in December 2021, with Slapface making its debut in 2022.

These two titles join other recent pick-ups for the leading horror service: Offseason, from writer-director Mickey Keating, and The Last Thing Mary Saw, from writer-director Edoardo Vitaletti, will also debut exclusively on Shudder in the U.K., Irseland, Australia, and New Zealand in 2022. (Both will also screen at FrightFest this month.) Shudder retains exclusive North American streaming rights for Offseason and The Last Thing Mary Saw next year.

“Shudder members will have access to some of the most exciting and compelling festival films in the months ahead,” said general manager of Shudder Craig Engler. “We are excited to debut [the] chilling horror-fantasy The Advent Calendar just in time for the holidays and [the] mysterious and eerie Slapface next year. They will join American gothic horror Offseason and unique period feature The Last Thing Mary Saw to haunt and delight our members.”

The acquisition deal for Slapface was negotiated by Emily Gotto of Shudder and by Patrick Ewald of Epic Pictures and Dread. Gotto also negotiated the deal for The Advent Calendar with Gregory Chambet of WTFilms.
