Neill Blomkamp Dives Deep Into His Career Journey on This Week’s ‘Post Mortem with Mick Garris’

Before he was an Oscar-nominated screenwriter, Neill Blomkamp came of age in South Africa with future screen star Sharlto Copley, was nearly expelled from Vancouver Film School, and made his bones working in music videos and commercials.

Tomorrow, the writer-director opens up to Post Mortem with Mick Garris host Mick Garris about his career ascent—one that most notably began with his dystopian sci-fi thriller District 9 and this year continues with Demonic, his first bonafide horror feature.

Demonic was shot in Canada last year, right in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic. The film revolves around a fraught relationship between a mother and daughter that brings a devastating supernatural force into the world. Blomkamp initially planned for it to be self-financed, but fortunately doubled his budget (for reasons revealed in the interview).

Blomkamp also offers insights into how he honed and mastered one of his stylistic signatures: his melding of handheld camera movement with CG technology. And he shares new details on his collaborative journey with Peter Jackson, who set out to produce a feature adaptation of Halo with Blomkamp as director, but decided to back District 9 instead when that project fell through.
