The OVERLOOK Series Based on THE SHINING Not Moving Forward on HBO Max

Deadline is reporting that the television series Overlook will not premiere on HBO Max. The new series is being developed by J.J. Abrams’s production company Bad Robot and was part of the inaugural Bad Robot slate at HBO Max for WarnerMediaas part of a 2019 mega deal.

Bad Robot has previously developed the series Westworld and the short-lived Lovecraft Country, which HBO canceled despite 18 Emmy Awards including Outstanding Drama Series. As well as the upcoming series Demimonde, Duster and Subject to Change.

A DC Justice League Dark show was also announced as part of Bad Robots HBO Max slate which has two series currently in development. Madame X and Constantine.

Deadline also reports that though Overlook was originally announced as a series order, the heads at HBO Max decided that the series was not a good fit for them.

Bad Robot, WBTV and Warner Brothers Television are currently shopping the show which is expected to land a new home soon with streaming giant Netflix being the likely destination.

Overlook is written by Dustin Thomason and Scott Brown. Executive Produced by J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson. The series is inspired by and features iconic characters from Stephen King’s The Shining.

The project marks the fourth collaboration between the three production companies set in the Stephen King universe. Including the underrated series Castle Rock, and the limited series 11.22.63 for Hulu, and the limited series Lisey’s Story currently streaming on Apple TV+.
