Exclusive Video Interview: Guillermo del Toro on Mama, Children in Horror, Pacific Rim and More

On Friday, January 18th, Guillermo del Toro and Universal Pictures present their latest modern macabre fairy tale Mama, which follows two young feral girls discovered living in the woods five years after surviving a harrowing car accident that left them orphaned and alone.
When sent off to live with their uncle and his girlfriend, the girls are followed by a mysterious presence known only as “Mama,” who wields a supernatural influence over them. But as the two settle into their new life and their new family, “Mama” doesn’t take kindly to this intrusion, and soon she lashes out against anyone who threatens to come between her and the girls.
Co-written and directed by Andrés Muschietti, Mama stars Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse. Barbara Muschietti, Andrés’ sister, also served as co-writer on the project.
During a recent press day for Mama, Dread Central had the distinct pleasure of sitting down and chatting with executive producer del Toro, who discussed his involvement in the project, his thoughts on why stories involving children make the horror genre that much more terrifying, and the wide array of stories he’s told throughout his career- everything from Blade to his upcoming epic robots vs. aliens flick Pacific Rim, which crash lands in theaters this July.
