While we’ve released dozens of films since The Lodgers holds a special place in this horror journalist’s heart. It’s a brilliant modern Gothic that never got the attention or appreciation it truly deserves. The ending is nothing short of stunning, a visual feast that’s simply impossible to forget.

If it’s been a while, or if you never experienced this emotionally charged horror movie (shot in an actual haunted estate, Loftus Hall in Ireland!), check out the trailer and synopsis below.

Synopsis:
1920, rural Ireland. Anglo Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence (The Lodgers) which enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother – and with the curse that haunts them.

Winner of several awards, The Lodgers had its world première at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and was closing night feature at the 50th Sitges Film Festival. Directed by Brian O’Malley (Let Us Prey) and written by David Turpin, the film stars Charlotte Vega (The Misfit Club), Bill Milner (X-Men: First Class), Eugene Simon (Game of Thrones), David Bradley (Harry Potter), and Moe Dunford (Vikings)

Trivia:
The basic plot has many similarities to Edgar Allen Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher (1939), for example: three main characters, a sister and brother, and a young man; the remote dilapidated manor-like house, incestuous relationships (spanning generations), the brother’s sick appearance, suggestions of an unnamed “curse”, and the sibling’s life being connected to the house. Both writer David Turpin and Director Brian O’Malley are also musicians. In fact, David Turpin composed the theme music. (Source)
