Mark Hamill Says Now-Extinct Bird Claw Looks Like It Came from STAR WARS

Back in 1987, the claw of a now-extinct moa bird was collected and cataloged by the New Zealand Speleological Society. The image has been making the rounds online, thanks to a tweet from @ArtifactsHub. That’s when the STAR WARS fun began.

Mark Hamill, who famously played Luke Skywalker, set the internet on fire, claiming he recognized the claw from his Return of the Jedi days! Check out his response below:

According to Awesome Inventions:

Moas’ lineage most likely began around 80 million years ago on the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Derived from the Polynesian word for fowl, moas consisted of three families, six genera and nine species. These species varied in sizes—some were around the size of a turkey, while others were larger than an ostrich. Of the nine species, the two largest had a height of about 12 feet and a weight of about 510 pounds.

Now that’s one big turkey!

In Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker falls through a trap door and must face off against a titanous beast called a Rancor. According to Wookiepedia (a Star Wars fansite):

Rancors were large semi-sentient reptilian carnivores native to the planet Dathomir. Standing around five meters tall, with their long arms, immense jaws, and armored hides that could withstand blaster fire, they were formidable predators. Despite this, the creatures were inherently benign and were even domesticated by the Witches of Dathomir, but could be provoked over time into a violent nature. A subspecies known as the jungle rancor populated the planet Felucia. The proper term of venery for rancors in Galactic Basic was a crash of rancors.

Do you agree that the moa claw looks like it could have come from a Ranco? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! You can also carry on the convo with me personally on Twitter @josh_millican.
