Horror History: Mary Lambert’s PET SEMATARY In Now 32 Years Old

On this day in horror history, director Mary Lambert’s adaptation of author Stephen King’s Pet Sematary opened back in 1989. And is still fucking SCARY to this day!

For those that might not know, the film tells the tale of Doctor Louis Creed who moves his family to Maine. There he meets a friendly dude, Jud Crandall. After the Creeds’ cat is killed, Crandall advises Louis to bury it near the old pet cemetery. The cat returns to life, but its … worse. When tragedy strikes, Louis buries a human body in the same ground. And then the horror really begins. Sometimes dead is better.
Dale Midkiff leads the killer cast as Louis Creed with Denise Crosby as Rachel Goldman-Creed, and Miko Hughes as Gage Creed. Blaze Berdahl joins them as Ellen “Ellie” Creed with Brad Greenquist as Victor Pascow and Susan Blommaert as Missy Dandridge. Andrew Hubatsek rounds out the cast as Zelda Goldman with Stephen King as Minister, and Fred Gwynne as Jud Crandall.
The best Pet Sematary flick still only sports a 51% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus: Pet Sematary is a bruising horror flick that wears its quirks on its sleeves, to the detriment of its scare factor.
Mary Lambert followed the film with the underrated 1992 sequel Pet Sematary Two with Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards, and Clancy Brown. Then Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer directed a remake in 2019 starring Jason Clarke and John Lithgow.
Paramount has confirmed that a prequel to Stephen King’s Pet Sematary is coming to its streaming platform Paramount+. Jeff Buhler, who penned the recent remake, will write the script for the new origin story. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce.
Let’s hope it’s the best Pet Sematary yet!
