Animal Ethologist Now Explains GODZILLA VS KONG with Science

In an extensive interview with animal behavioral ecologist Dr. Marc Bekoff in CoS, Isaac Feldberg looks at Godzilla vs Kong through the lens of science.

I can see your eyes rolling already! Yes, a film partial set in Hollow Earth featuring anti-gravity technology and a robot Titan should not be taken seriously. Still, how closely do the fights reflect actual animal behavior? Inquiring minds wanted to know!

I highly suggest reading the entire interview, HERE. But you can see highlights below.

“Whether they could communicate with one another, that is something I thought about from an ethological point of view,” Beckoff told Feldberg. “I don’t know how in the world they’d read one another’s signals, since lizards don’t actually growl like Godzilla, and they do different types of displays, like bobbing their heads or letting the dewlap under their chin change color or position when they feel aggressive.”

“When you watch Godzilla vs. Kong as an ethologist, with these humongous characters, you see more than you would in the real lizard world or the real gorilla world,” the ethologist continues. “But I thought their fights were well-done, I really do. These were dominance fights, they avoided one another, and – assuming they could each understand what was going on – they communicated their intentions.”

Godzilla vs Kong is now in theaters nationwide and available to stream on HBO Max.
