Season 1 of THE LAST OF US on HBO Will Cover the First Game Only

The video game The Last of Us Part II took home the award for “Excellence in Narrative” out of SXSW this weekend. In an interview with the game’s Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Narrative Lead Halley Gross, IGN’s Lucy O’Brien steered the conversation towards the upcoming Last of Us TV series in the works at HBO.

In the video below, Druckmann confirms that Season 1 of The Last of Us on HBO will cover the first game only.

The Last of Us Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Narrative Lead Halley Gross join us to discuss the successes of The Last of Us Part II’s narrative design after winning the Excellence in Narrative award during the 201 SXSW Gaming Awards. They also discuss certain aspects of the upcoming The Last of Us series and how the game take most of its queues from the first video game, along with some fresh material.

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has cast Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) as Joel and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) will play Elle. The version of Ellie we’ll see in the series will be 14 years old, while Ramsey herself is currently 17.

Johan Renck (Chernobyl) was set to direct The Last of Us. But he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov will take over. Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s killer limited series Chernobyl, is writing and executive producing with the game’s writer and creative director, Neil Druckmann.

The post-apocalypse tale centers on the relationship between Joel, a smuggler in this new world, and Ellie, a teenager who may be key to a cure for the pandemic. Joel is hired to smuggle the 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
