Despite COVID Delays NIGHTBREED and DEAD RINGERS Reboots Are Still “On the Fast-Track”

In a lengthy spotlight on Morgan Creek published by Park Circus, the storied movie studio promised that, despite delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, planned reimaginings of Nightbreed and Dead Ringers are still in the works–and a priority.

“Titles such as Ace Ventura, Major League, Young Guns, Dead Ringers, Diabolique, and Nightbreed are a few examples of multi-platform projects on the fast-track for reinvention.”

As we previously reported, Rachel Weisz is set to both star in and produce the Dead Ringers reboot, which will take the form of a TV series on Amazon. Obviously, we can expect a gender swap as the original film, directed and co-written by David Cronenberg, featured twin gynecologists played by Jeremy Irons.

In the reboot, Weisz will play both twins, who are described as: “the most successful, brilliant and extraordinary people you’ve never met. Identical from head to toe, these two OB-GYNs are on a mission to change the way women birth, starting with Manhattan. The pair share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes, including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.”

Alice Birch (Normal People) will write and executive produce with Weisz, Stacy O’Neil, Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, Ali Krug, James G. Robinson, David Robinson, and Barbara Wall.

Beverly falls hard for one of the patients, Claire (Geneviève Bujold), but when she inadvertently deceives him, he slips into a state of madness.

As for the Nighbreed reboot, everything is nebulous. There have been many announced projects based on the works of Clive Barker over the years with few (if any) actually coming to fruition. Still, Morgan Creek’s enthusiasm and reassurances will likely keep fans hoping for a reimagining of the film, which can boast a sizable cult following.

While we wait patiently for updates, you can revisit the trailer and synopsis for Clive Barker’s Nightbreed (released in 1990) below.

Synopsis:
Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) is haunted by terrifying nightmares of a city of monsters. He goes to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Decker (David Cronenberg), for help. But what Boone doesn’t know is that Decker is really a serial killer. Decker frames Boone to take the fall for his murders, and Boone is killed by the police. But Boone is brought back to life by the monsters of his dreams, the Nightbreed, who in turn join Boone in his quest to stop Decker from killing again.
