ETERNALS Director Developing New “Sci-Fi Western” Take on DRACULA

Universal has snagged Chloé Zhao (Eternals, Nomadland) to write, direct, and also produce a new take on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. But the new film won’t be a straightforward adaptation. Zhao’s new take will a sci-fi Western?
Universal president, Peter Cramer, says: “Chloé’s singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood. We are thrilled to work with her to reimagine one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.”
THR reports: “[It] will be a far cry from the more traditional or even modern incarnations made over the years […] Zhao’s version is described as an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western. Themes of being on society’s fringes. Something Zhao has tackled in her previous work, will course through the project’s veins.”

Zhao also added: “I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody. I’m very excited to work with Donna, Peter, and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.”
No word on how this new Dracula will affect director Karyn Kusama (The Invitation, Jennifer’s Body) was also developing with Blumhouse… But we’ll keep you updated.
Now I don’t know about you, but my favortie take on the classic character is director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 adaptation. The one with Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes, Billy Campbell, Monica Bellucci, and Tom Waits as Renfield.
Coppola’s film sports a 71% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Overblown in the best sense of the word, Francis Ford Coppola’s vision of Bram Stoker’s Dracula rescues the character from decades of campy interpretations — and features some terrific performances to boot.
