CREEPSHOW & THE FOG Actor Hal Holbrook Has Passed Away

Creepshow and The Fog actor Hal Holbrook has passed away at 95. He won five Emmys and snagged an Oscar nomination for Sean Penn’s Into The Wild at the age of 82. Holbrook was married three times, the last to Dixie Carter (Designing Women). They were married for 26 years until her death from cancer in 2010.

Creepshow is a compendium of five short but terrifying tales contained within a single feature, this film conjures scares from traditional bogeymen and portents of doom. In one story, a monster escapes from its holding cell. Another focuses on a husband (Leslie Nielsen) with a creative way of getting back at his cheating wife. Other stories concern a rural man (Stephen King) and a visitor from outer space, and a homeowner (E.G. Marshall) with huge bug problems and a boozing corpse.
The film sports a 73% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: It’s uneven, as anthologies often are, but Creepshow is colorful, frequently funny, and treats its inspirations with infectious reverence.

The Fog begins with a tiny California coastal town preparing to commemorate its centenary. Inanimate objects spring eerily to life; Rev. Malone (Hal Holbrook) stumbles upon a dark secret about the town’s founding; radio announcer Stevie (Adrienne Barbeau) witnesses a mystical fire; and hitchhiker Elizabeth (Jamie Lee Curtis) discovers the mutilated corpse of a fisherman. Then a mysterious iridescent fog descends upon the village, and more people start to die.
The film sports a 75% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: A well-crafted return to horror for genre giant John Carpenter, The Fog rolls in and wraps viewers in suitably slow-building chills
