Horror History: CLOVERFIELD Is Now 13 Years Old
On this day in horror history, producer J.J. Abrams and director Matt Reeves’s found-footage monster mash Cloverfield was unleashed back in 2008.
Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) penned the script. Michael Stahl-David stars with Odette Yustman, T.J. Miller, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, and Mike Vogel.
It tells the tale of a group of New Yorkers enjoying a going-away party. But little do they know that a creature the size of a skyscraper descends upon the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Using a handheld video camera, the friends record their struggle to survive as New York crumbles around them.

Cloverfield grossed a total of $16.9M on its opening day. It made $40.1M opening weekend, snagging the biggest January release at the time. Worldwide, it has grossed $170.6M making it the first movie in 2008 to gross over $100M.
The film sports a 77% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: A sort of Blair Witch Project crossed with Godzilla, Cloverfield is economically paced, stylistically clever, and filled with scares.
The film spawned two sequels (so far). Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher, Jr. And Julius Onah’s The Cloverfield Paradox with Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris O’Dowd, David Oyelowo, and Zhang Ziyi. I’m still down for another flick if Abrams is up for it.
