Here at Dread Central we love the Soska sisters, and we’re happy to report that their latest flick, American Mary, just landed distro overseas so now the whole world can officially dig on their lunacy!

According to The Daily Dead, the film has been acquired by Universal Pictures International Entertainment. The acquisition includes all rights to American Mary in a number of international territories, including the UK and Germany. While a specific release date has not been set, look for American Mary to be available internationally in early 2013.

From the Press Release
IndustryWorks Pictures, the producer of its latest horror film AMERICAN MARY, announced today that Universal Pictures International Entertainment, the international home entertainment division of Universal Pictures, has acquired all rights to AMERICAN MARY for a number of international territories, including the UK and Germany. From filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska, the creative team that made the indie smash film Dead Hooker in a Trunk, we introduce AMERICAN MARY, starring Katharine Isabelle (GINGER SNAPS, INSOMNIA) and Julia Maxwell (HOT TUB TIME MACHINE, CHARLIE ST. CLOUD).

American Mary tells the story of a medical student named Mary (Katharine Isabelle) who grows increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school and the established doctors she once idolised. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary through the messy world of underground surgeries, which leaves more marks on her than the so-called freakish clientele.

Following its market screening in Cannes earlier this year, AMERICAN MARY will premiere in the UK on Monday, August 27th, at Film4 FrightFest at the Empire Cinema in Leicester Square, London, with Katharine Isabelle and the directors in attendance. UPIE is looking to release AMERICAN MARY in early 2013. IndustryWorks commented: “We’re very excited to be working with such an established distributor that not only has significant presence in the market place but truly understood that American Mary is something special and very unique, touching on several controversial subject matters, something that is very rare in the business today. This is a film that will certainly resonate with the massive pop culture audiences of today.”

American Mary is the second film from Vancouver, BC, directors Jen and Sylvia Soska. Their first project, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, has developed something of a cult following, giving a real buzz to their heretofore hush-hush follow-up, American Mary. We here at Dread Central let the cat out of the bag, revealing the film’s plot revolves around the underground world of extreme body modification. Yikes!

Written and directed by the Soskas, American Mary stars Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren, Paula Lindberg, Clay St. Thomas, John Emmet Tracy and Twan Holliday.

Synopsis
This metaphor for the Soskas’ own journey through the independent film industry follows medical student Mary Mason as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the twilight world of body modification and underground surgeries where obsessed flesh artists will pay anything and go through any pain to get their unusual procedures done. But Mary soon finds that her new “profession” leaves more marks on her own psyche than on her freakish clientele.
