Neill Blomkamp Made A Secret Horror Movie During The Pandemic

Move over Ben Wheatley, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp also made a secret supernatural horror movie during the pandemic. He shot the untitled film in British Columbia over the summer. It sports a strong sci-fi and VFX component.

Plot details are under wraps but Deadline reports the project is something the Blomkamp has “always wanted to make.” I would hope so considering it’s the first feature he’s helmed since Chappie in 2015.

Blomkamp planned to shoot an action-thriller called The Inferno with Taylor Kitsch (Waco) over the summer, but COVID hit and he had to make something smaller.

Neill Blomkamp’s mysterious new film will wrap up by next spring. Julian Clarke (Deadpool, District 9, Elysium Chappie) will edit. Byron Kopman (Volition) provided the cinematography. The cast is made up of unknown Canadian actors.

Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 followed this synopsis: Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth — not to conquer or give aid, but — to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens’ welfare. But will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent (Sharlto Copley) contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

The film sports a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Technically brilliant and emotionally wrenching, District 9 has action, imagination, and all the elements of a thoroughly entertaining science-fiction classic.

It’s hard to imagine Neill Blomkamp’s new flick will live up to those heights. But we can all hope, right? We’ll keep you updated as we hear more. Stay tuned.
