MORTAL KOMBAT: James Wan-Produced Reboot Almost Hit HBO Max

Producer James Wan and director Simon McQuoid’s Mortal Kombat reboot is in the can. And today we hear Warner Bros. considered sending it straight to HBO Max. But the film is now expected to have a delayed theatrical debut instead.

Specifically, Variety reports: “[Warner Bros.] also considered [premerinng Mortal Kombat on HBO Max] but expect to delay the film’s theatrical debut instead.”

This reboot is said to center on a male protagonist. Someone drawn into the interdimensional tournament and begins to realize his true potential as a result.

Directed by Simon McQuoid (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, the reboot is based on the video game created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The cast includes Ludi Lin, Joe Taslim, Tadanobu Asano, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Josh Lawson, Chin Han, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

James Wan and Todd Garner are producing with Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins serving as executive producers.

The 1995 adaptation centered on Lord Rayden (Christopher Lambert) who handpicks three martial artists — federal agent Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson), Shaolin monk Lui Kang (Robin Shou) and action movie sensation Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) — and mentors them. After intense training, Rayden transports the trio to Outworld, the site of an inter-dimensional fighting tournament. There, the three humans must defeat the demonic warriors of the evil Shang Sung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) — or allow Sung to take over the Earth.

Mortal Kombat was set to hit on January 15, 2021… but now? Who knows. We’ll make sure to keep you posted though if we hear anything further. Stay tuned.
