Alex Garland Working on Secret New Low-Budget Horror Movie

Writer-director Alex Garland is working on a low-budget horror movie, set in the UK. Casting and financing are underway, for a spring or summer 2021 shoot.

The film came to Alex Garland while he was working on another TV series. A series that will tackle “the ineffectual and surface-level state of protests in recent years.”

But it turns out this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests changed his plans. The organization, dedication, and anger Alex Garland feared lost was still alive.

He tells Empire: “I wrote a low-budget horror movie, set in the UK. I don’t know if it’s unrealistic or not. Always at this particular moment, a film always feels unrealistic, but then somehow it works out. At some point with civil disobedience, you have to start smashing stuff up. So I was writing about the need to smash stuff up. I thought, ‘So now what I’m writing is pointless.’ In a good way. I almost felt glad.”

For those that might not know,m Garland penned the screenplays for classics such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd. He also directed films like Ex Machina and Annihilation. Oh, and he was the creator, writer, director, and showrunner of the hit FX series Devs. Needless to say, he’s a filmmaker worth following.

Garland’s last feature directing project was Annihilation. It centered on Lena, a biologist and former soldier, who joins a mission to uncover what happened to her husband inside a sinister and mysterious phenomenon expanding across America. Once inside, they discover a world of mutated landscapes and creatures, as dangerous as it is beautiful, that threatens both their lives and their sanity.

It sports an 88% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Annihilation backs up its sci-fi visual wonders and visceral genre thrills with an impressively ambitious — and surprisingly strange — exploration of challenging themes that should leave audiences pondering long after the end credits roll.
