This Day in Horror History: Happy Birthday, uh, Jeff Goldblum

On this day in horror history, actor, director, and musician Jeff Goldblum (Jeffrey Lynn Goldblum) was born in West Homestead, Pennsylvania back in 1952.

Goldblum sure has come along way since early roles such as Freak #1 in Death Wish and Lacey Party Guest in Annie Hall. Now the man is known for some of the biggest movies out there like Independence Day and Spielberg’s Jurassic Park.

Goldblum is the kind of guy that likes to take on movies with a dramatic flare such as The Big Chill, The Right Stuff, Silverado, Nine Months, Deep Cover, and Powder with a mixture of zany comedies like The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Vibes, Earth Girls Are Easy, and Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok.

Pretty fly for a white guy.

And speaking of zany comedies, Goldblum is also somewhat of a muse for Rushmore and Bottle Rocket director Wes Anderson in films like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and his voice work in Isle of Dogs.

Goldblum has been in his share of fright flicks including The Sentinel, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Transylvania 6-5000, Hideaway, and Ichabod Crane in the 1980 TV adaptation of Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

And speaking of TV, Goldblum has sported roles in such classic shows as The Simpsons, Portlandia, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The League, Friends, Will & Grace, and King of the Hill. And let’s not forget he voiced God in Happy and Verminous Skumm in Captain Planet and the Planeteers. He currently stars as himself in the Disney+ docuseries The World According to Jeff Goldblum.

Life, uh, finds a way.

He also voiced Dracula in the video game Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland.

All of that said, all of us around these parts know Goldblum best for his role in as scientist Seth Brundle in The Dead Zone director David Cronenberg’s remake of the classic tale of teleportation terror The Fly with Geena Davis and John Getz.

Up next for Goldblum will be his return as Dr. Ian Malcolm in director Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World 3 aka Jurassic World: Dominion along with original Jurassic Park co-stars Sam Neil as Alan Grant and Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler.
