This Day in Horror History: Happy Birthday, Guillermo del Toro!
On this day in horror history, writer-director Guillermo del Toro was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco in 1964. The Mexican filmmaker, author, actor, and former special effects makeup artist is best known for films such Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water which won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture.
One of the true masters of movies, Del Toro has shifted between personal, lower-budget films such as Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone and tentpoles, like Mimic, Blade II, Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak.
On top of those classics, he has also written and/or produced The Orphanage, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, The Hobbit, The Book of Life, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark based on the books by Alvin Schwartz.
He also co-authored The Strain trilogy with Chuck Hogan, which spawned a live-action television series and teamed with DreamWorks Animation on the Netflix animated series Trollhunters, 3Below, and Wizards. He also executive produced Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2, Rise of the Guardians, and Kung Fu Panda 3.
Up next for Del Toro is a dark stop-motion version of Pinocchio, and a new adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham’s novel Nightmare Alley with a killer cast including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, and Rooney Mara.
