SPIRAL Writers Considered Bringing Back Danny Glover’s Detective Tapp

Spiral co-writer Josh Stolberg, who penned the script with his partner Pete Goldfinger, spoke to The Production Meeting about the film’s delay and whether or not Danny Glover’s character from Saw was considered for the film.

Synopsis:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

Spiral is currently eying a May 21st, 2021 release date.

On the film’s delay, Stolberg told the podcast:

“The closer we got to it, the more I actually worried that we were going to open.  The worst-case scenario is that you open and nobody comes because nobody’s wanting to come out into the movie theater. This is one of my favorite films that I’ve worked on – Chris Rock is incredible and to be able to write lines for Sam Jackson is on another planet. So I was really hoping that the film would open in a theater. I’m willing to wait – and I hope the fans are willing to wait for a year too because that’s what it’s gonna be.”

On the idea of having Glover reprise his role as Detective David Tapp:

“I think for a little while that we played around with the idea that Chris [Rock’s character] was related to that character in some way. You would be doing a great disservice to your career if you didn’t think about that at least once – while you’re doing a reboot or rather a continuation. But at the end of the day, it just didn’t pass the smell test.”
