Gritty Indonesian Superhero Movie GUNDALA Punches Its Way To Home Video In The US
We love superheroes here on Dread Central, so we’re ecstatic to learn that the gritty new Indonesian superhero movie Gundala is now available on home video in the US. You can purchase a copy of the film on DVD or Blu-ray from Amazon, and it can also be streamed on Amazon Prime.
Directed by Joko Anwar, Gundala was adapted from the comic book of the same name by creator Harya Suraminata. The film stars Abimana Aryasatya as Sancaka, a security guard who becomes a superhero known as Gundala after he discovers that he can shoot lightning bolts from his hands. As well as keeping street-level crime at bay, Gundala also has to contend with crime lords and a resurrected ancient warrior known as Ki Wilawuk.
The supporting cast includes Tara Basro, Ario Bayu, Lukman Sardi, and Bront Palarae. It has also been stated that Gundala will be the first instalment in a shared universe of movies based on properties belonging to Bumilangit, who own the rights to hundreds of superhero characters. So, we expect to see many more Indonesian superhero movies in the near future.
After making a splash at the box office in Indonesia, Gundala went on to be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, and we’re glad it’s now available on home video for US audiences to enjoy. While the film is not particularly graphic, it’s still a great deal more visceral than most PG-13 superhero movies to come out of Hollywood, and we definitely think our readers should give Gundala a go.
