Boyd Holbrook on Why Shane Black’s THE PREDATOR Failed

Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys writer-director Shane Black’s Predator reboot The Predator failed to reboot the beloved sci-fi series. And today, star Boyd Holbrook reveals why the movie was a disappointment.

Holbrook tells THR: “I just think the first one [Predator] caught lightning in a bottle. And with people wanting to do more, maybe you should just let a sleeping dog lie, sometimes. That was a big takeaway for me.”

While the film received mixed reviews, it went on to earn $160M worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

Written by Black and Fred Dekker, the film follows this synopsis: From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home. The universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter, and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and an evolutionary biologist can prevent the end of the human race.

Holbrook’s co-stars include Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, and Sterling K. Brown.

Rated R for strong bloody violence, language throughout, and crude sexual references, the film sports a 33% over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: The Predator has violence and quips to spare, but its chaotically hollow action adds up to another missed opportunity for a franchise increasingly defined by disappointment.
