Dave Franco’s THE RENTAL Snags #1 at the Box Office

IFC and first-time director Dave Franco’s fright flick The Rental with Dan Stevens and Alison Brie was the number one movie at the box-office this weekend, snagging clearing over $420K from 251 theaters.

IFC Films EVP of Film Acquisitions and Production Arianna Bocco praised the drive-ins which have been driving a majority of the film’s business.

Franco in a statement: “I have been truly fortunate to have a partner in IFC Films whose agility and creativity during this time has allowed us to have this incredible moment for our film. As a first-time filmmaker, I’m beyond grateful to the audiences who supported us this weekend.”

Franco co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Swanberg (V/H/S), based on a story by Franco, Swanberg, and Mike Demski. It stars Dan Stevens, Alison Brie, Sheila Vand, Jeremy Allen White, and Toby Huss.

The film tells the tale of two couples on an oceanside getaway who grow suspicious that the host of their seemingly perfect rental house may be spying on them. Before long, what should have been a celebratory weekend trip turns into something far more sinister.

Rated R for violence, language throughout, drug use and some sexuality, it sports a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes with this Critics Consensus: Some tricky genre juggling makes The Rental a bit of a fixer-upper, but effective chills and a solid cast make this a fine destination for horror fans.
