Award-Winning #MeToo Era Horror Short LILI Now Streaming on ALTER
Regular readers of Dread Central know that we’re huge fans of the bite-sized horror offerings from ALTER. Their latest, Lili, was an Official Selection of Fantasia International Film Festival, Macabro, BeyondFest, Telluride Horror Show, Brooklyn Horror Film Festival, Nightmares Film Festival, Aesthetica Film Festival, Cinequest, BIFFF, Imagine, and Fantaspoa.
Shot in a single take and heavily inspired by the #MeToo movement, director Yfke van Berckelaer’s short Lili brings the audience to the casting couch, with an unexpected and fatal twist. The intimate two-person film explores a deeply unsettling, and genuinely creepy, game of cat and mouse.
Featuring stellar performances from Lisa Smit, star of Netflix’s dark Dutch drama Arse, and Derek de Lint (Poltergeist: The Legacy), the film has screened at over 45 international film festivals following its launch at BIFAN. It has won numerous awards, including Best Screenplay and Best Performance at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.

“When the #MeToo movement first hit, I was inspired to see so many women (and men) band together and make a stand. So, it floored me when I would hear people say that they thought this was just an overblown cry for attention,” says van Berckelaer. “I realized many people weren’t understanding the situations these women were placed in and so it was important for me to make a movie that would show how vulnerable you can be, how trapped, and how hard this is to get out of. On top of that, I wanted to incorporate some female power because if #MeToo has taught me anything it’s that we’re much stronger than we think, and that it’s okay fight, or even bite, back.”
