This news may leave fans of the Evil Dead franchise divided, especially those hoping for the return of Ash and/or the continuation of Mia’s story (as began in Fede Alvarez’s 2013 reboot): Another Evil Dead movie is in the works–but it will most likely be a stand-alone without any familiar characters.
This is what we can assume following a recent interview Bruce Campbell (the actor who plays Ash in The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, and the Ash vs Evil Dead TV series on Starz) gave to Empire:
Speaking to Empire in the Heroes Issue, Ash himself – aka the ever-groovy Bruce Campbell – opened up about the latest developments around a new film. “We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin, who is writing and directing the next Evil Dead,” he confirmed when asked whether there was life in the old cabin in the woods. “It’s called Evil Dead Now. [Evil Dead mastermind] Sam [Raimi] handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole In The Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.
“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating. You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
Obviously this project is in its infancy (and we’ve been teased by past announcements regarding the future of the Evil Dead franchise that never came to fruition), but we’ll be keeping our ears to the ground in order to bring you additional details as they emerge. Stay tuned and check back often.
