Crypt TV Remaking Marathi-Language Horror Movie LAPACHHAPI With Bollywood Star Nushrat Bharucha

Blumhouse-backed Crypt TV’s first Indian production will be Chhori, a Hindi horror remake of writer-director Vishal Furia’s Marathi-language horror movie Lapachhapi.

Bollywood actress Nushrat Bharucha will star. She says: “This genre excites me and the fact that the story is anchored in practices of our society, makes it relatable and impactful. I have wanted to work with Vishal Furia and I am so glad we are finally getting to collaborate on Chhori, which is so close to his heart.”

Jack Davis and Vikram Malhotra are producing the remake.

Malhotra said: “Abundantia Entertainment has always believed in supporting progressive and insightful stories. I am delighted that we are extending our content philosophy further with the Hindi remake of Lapachhapi.”

Davis added: “When I first saw Lapachhapi … I was blown away and instantly knew it could lead the way in elevating the horror genre in India. Abundantia and Crypt share a passion for using genre as a way to tell culture changing stories and I found the perfect mix of that and meaningful social issues in Lapachhapi.”

The original film’s writer-director Vishal Furia will helm this remake as well.

Furia says: “When I first heard that Vikram Malhotra and Abundantia Entertainment were considering a remake of my film, I was thrilled – simply because I believe there is a lot more I want to say with this story. I want to take the remake a few steps further and make a much more impactful, scary and thrilling film.”

The film is said to be a blend of horror and social drama, telling the story of age-old societal beliefs and practices that give rise to tales of terror. More specifically, here’s a plot rundown via IMDb: Tushar and his pregnant wife Neha are forced to leave the city after their creditors attack. Tushar’s driver Bahurao tells him to come to his village until things settle down in the city. Tushar and Neha reach the village surrounded by sugarcane fields. Bahurao’s wife Tulsabai is very caring towards Neha but feels that she is not whom she claims as sometimes she becomes violent. Neha starts to see kids playing in the fields who disappears suddenly, she also comes across a transistor which has a voice of a woman playing with kids.
