Blumhouse & Stephen King’s FIRESTARTER Aims To Shoot This Year

Blumhouse recently snagged Keith Thomas (The Vigil) to direct their adaptation of Stephen King‘s classic sci-fi horror novel Firestarter. And today screenwriter Scott Teems (The Quarry) teased that the remake might start filming this year.
He tells MovieWeb: “I’m still the writer. We just got a new director named Keith Thomas and he made a great film called The Vigil coming up this year, and Universal and Blumhouse, they want to make Firestarter. It has always been an important project to them. I think we’re making active steps toward that happening this year. You know, the industry shut down notwithstanding, and that may change things, but right now, I’m really hopeful that it might happen this year.”

Halloween Kills co-screenwriter Scott Teems has been put in charge of adapting Blumhouse’s new take on the semi-classic king novel for Universal, Blumhouse and Akiva Goldsman‘s Weed Road. Jason Blum and Goldsman will produce while Martha De Laurentiis will executive produce.
The original film starred David Keith and Heather Locklear as a couple that, as youths, participated in secret experiments, allowing themselves to be subjected to mysterious medical tests. Years later, the couple’s daughter, Charlie (Drew Barrymore), begins to exhibit the ability to set fires solely with her mind. This volatile talent makes the youngster extremely dangerous and soon she becomes a target for the enigmatic agency known as “The Shop.”
The first Firestarter adaptation was directed by Mark L. Lester (Commando, Class of 1984) and produced by Frank Capra Jr. and Martha Schumacher from a screenplay written by Stanley Mann (Damien: Omen II) based on the novel by Stephen King. It starred David Keith, Drew Barrymore, Freddie Jones, Heather Locklear, Martin Sheen, George C. Scott, Art Carney, and Louise Fletcher. Universal Pictures released it back on May 11, 1984.
