Last month it was reported that Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) will be making an HBO series based on the ever-popular video game The Last Of Us. And today fan-casting favorite, Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Bad Teacher) says she’d be up for taking on the role of Ellie.
Dever tells Collider: “Well, this is the first time I’m being asked about this. Listen, I am a huge fan of the game, and I don’t know if a lot of people know that, but I’m saying it now; I am a huge fan of that video game. I think it is a beautiful story. It’s just a wonderful narrative, and I fell in love with that game when it came out. And I played it with my dad and we just had the best time. I’m not very good at it. My aim is really bad, but I’m working on getting better at playing.
She continues: “But I love The Last of Us. I think it’s an incredible story. I obviously have been seeing the Internet, and I’ve obviously been seeing a lot of that. Neil Druckmann, I worked with him on Uncharted 4. I think he’s one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met, and one of the sweetest. And I’m not shutting it down, you know? I’m not shutting it down. I would absolutely love to do that. But I don’t know where it’s at yet. But I love The Last Of Us.”
Who does she think should be cast as Joel?
She says: “There are so many people that would be so great for that role! I’ve seen the fan casts of Hugh Jackman as Joel. I like that one. And I also know Hugh and I’ve worked with Hugh and I think he’s the nicest guy in the world so I think he should be in everything.”
The HBO series will cover the events of the original game. So fittingly, the game’s writer and creative director Neil Druckmann will work with Mazin to pen and executive produce. Mazin and Druckmann will write and executive produce the series. Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells. The project will be the first television series from PlayStation Productions and is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television.
